The organic cotton that is produced here is some of the finest and best documented that I have seen. I can't wait to spin some of the samples they sent me and there will be some on offer in the future, so if you are interested, please get in touch.

Although I was told at the travel office that I found in Coimbatore that the Nilgiri Blue Mountain Railway was out of service due to a washout and therefore took a bus to Coonoor, I was later able to ride the famous narrow gauge railway from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) and from there down to Mettupalayam, thereby covering the entire route of the railway.

Coonoor is billed as a sleepy tea growing hamlet, but is actually heavily populated and full of lots of hustle and bustle. I visited a tea plantation, as well as the Tranquilitea tea room, walked in the rain in Sim's Park where I saw the famous map of the world created out of vegetation and met some Indian tourists, visited with and tried to avoid monkeys, walked around town, tried to see Dolphin Nose, Lamb's Rock and Lady Canning's Seat, but was thwarted by fog. Saw Cathryn's Falls right before it was once again swallowed by the mists.

Back in Coonoor proper, I was pleasantly surprised to find a workshop where tribal women are trained to create handicrafts by sewing, knitting and spinning to help them make a decent living. I was also happy to hear that women road laborers had negotiated a raise from Rs. 80 to Rs. 90 per day, which may be only $2.25 but it is at least a start.<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; These items also are available if you want to do some spinning, dying and/or knitting of this delectable fiber. Again, just get in touch and I will hook you up.

I flew on a Kingfisher flight that night (Sunday) to Chennai, where I spent my last night in India. In Chennai, after doing a fair amount of detective work, I was able to locate the Royal Enfield factory, which I had wanted to tour. The guide book gave a phone number that was out of service and listed the tours as free and the hours as 9:30am to 5:00pm, neglecting to mention the 2 and a half hour lunch break that interrupts the middle of the day for the entire factory, but not to be discouraged, I went ahead and waited an hour in the waiting room to take the tour, where I was warned not to take any photos of the actual machines which turn out the leaky but mystical creatures which are the Enfield Bullets and Thunderbirds. Instead, I photographed the parts and the finished cycles. The guy doing the pinstriping is working entirely freehand and does an amazing job.The tour was interesting in presenting the modern practices used on the assembly line to improve both safety and yield. No doubt these will help to improve the quality of the bike itself as time goes by. There I catch the Blue Mountain Railway to Coonoor. I'll stop there and make a side trek to Kotagiri (okay, maybe bus there and walk back) where I will visit a Women's Cooperative where they teach handicrafts. Then I'll get back on the Blue Mountain Rails to get to Ooty (Oodagamandalam), the famous hill station. From there the BMR takes me back to Mettupalayam, where I take a train or bus to Bangalore. In Bangalore, I will check out some cashmere for spinning and maybe some silk to bring home. I'll take a flight from there to Chennai. In Chennai, I will get to meet Jeremy's friend Rekha and visit the Enfield motorcycle factory before catching my flight home on the 31st.

It has been great being here, but I am really looking forward to getting home and cooking some good old fashioned American food (okay, good old fashioned American hippie food), seeing my family, playing with the dogs, playing with my grandbabies, playing with my spinning wheel and getting cold while camping out at the Folks Festival.

This has been an amazing three months. The things I've learned about people and life and the friendships I've begun will affect my outlook forever. Sorry for the long silence! I have been too lax in posting and not because I have been lazy, just trying to do everything I can in the last 4 weeks I have here in Tirunelveli. I went to 2 weddings in one day, the first was my first Hindu wedding, for which we had to walk barefoot to the temple. The second was another wedding of a family member of the doctors at our hospital. Of course, both involved copious amounts of wonderful food. In fact, at the Hindu wedding they insisted on feeding me before and after the ceremony!

Mirko, Justin and I went shopping one day last week and inadvertently got lost before we actually arrived at our intended destination. Instead, we bought lunghi's at a different store and having become further lost, were rescued by 2 sisters who turned out to be teachers at a local secondary school who were dying to ask us in for tea and snacks. They then guided us back to the bus stop from which we made our way back into charted territory.

On Sunday, June 24, we went for a day trip to Courtallam(Kuttrallam) to see the waterfalls. You have to hike a fair distance to get to all fo them but the views and the water itself was worth the effort. At the main, lower falls, women and men go into opposite sides of the falls, but in the upper falls the situation is slightly less formal. Still, all the women go into the water fully dressed and the men go in bathing trunks. It was still quite refreshing to just stand there and let the water pour over you. The monkeys were also entertaining. We saw the biggest jackfruit in the world and ate adventurous stand food...

On the weekend just past I accompanied a few volunteers to Pondicherry, a former French colony. There we experienced some culture shock in not eating Indian food for a solid 2 days! Wild! Hot Breads is everything they are cracked up to be! Great fresh croissants, omelettes and REAL COFFEE!!! Found some workshops that are connected with the Sri Aurobindo Society which incorporates spiritual training with training for the solid world in the form of handmade paper, incense, fabric printing and book publication. We saw the ocean but I did not swim in it as the "beach" was mainly comprised of large rocks and there was a very strong "side current" which was moving people swiftly down the beach when they tried to walk in the water...

Saw the Ghandi memorial and some lovely neighborhoods and the Botanical Garden. The route we covered climbed from sea level to over 6700 feet. It felt almost like home. Many of the plant species looked familiar, but even those were somewhat different from the varieties I see in my familiar surroundings. The only one that didn't appear to have changed was the Century plant with its tall flower stalk and I was unable to capture any of them with my camera.

We arrived in "Kodai" via a night bus which was aptly designated a "Semi-Sleeper", as while the driver and a few of the passengers appeared to be in a nightmare, the rest of us were just along for the ride. The first half hour was great and relaxing, after that, the rest of the passengers boarded the bus and there was no room to breathe, much less sleep... but it got us there in time for a gorgeous sunrise and plenty of time to walk around town, have breakfast, find our hotel and our comrades before setting out on our rainforest trek.

Some interesting signs, an observatory that didn't allow visitors and several wedding parties who appeared to have been partying since the previous day... David, this is for you: he reminded me uncannily of you. Whether it was body language, his smile or his apparently intimate knowledge of certain indigenous plants, I'm not sure, but the resemblance was definitely there.

We hiked up to a good vantage point in the Shola forest to look down at the mists rising up from the valley, saw tree ferns, calla lilies, wild golden raspberries, wild strawberries, datura, brugmansia, yellow sundrops, jack in the pulpit, lantana, and many other flowering plants, along with waterfalls, dense rainforest growth and lots of litter. I was truly wishing I had brought a trash bag with me so I could pick up trash like I did at Periyar... actually, it wasn't quite as bad, but it is disconcerting to have someone telling you how hard the officials are working at preserving the rainforest while at the same time hopping over a stream in which resides a used disposable diaper...

That said, we did see a lot of beautiful landscape. After lunch, during which I posed for my official International Knitting in Public Day photo, we had the obligatory shopping tour, finding among our treasures, the Eco Nut health food store, which just happened to be in the same building as our hotel and featured the first whole grain bread I have seen since arriving in India. They also provided me with some lovely homemade blueberry jam which I have been enjoying ever since. Another find was the Grandma's Jackfruit preserves, which I will share with any takers upon my return. The hardware store provided me with the 2 items I have been needing to make my room at the hospital complete: an extension cord (only one outlet) and a water heating coil for heating my porridge and tea water in the morning.

The lovely hot (yes) shower (that came out of a showerhead up on the wall!!!) was a welcome welcome to our cozy little hotel room. The ladies who stayed at the other hotel and described their accommodations aptly as a shed reported very cold temperatures overnight, but we were quite snug at J's after a lovely dinner at the Cloud Street Inn ( background of the knitting shot) I'm not advertising them, just want to make sure I remember if I ever get to go back... We were so spoiled by the food that we ate 2 more meals there.

The next morning I was surprised to hear a different sort of street noise from what I am used to hearing in Tirunelveli. No blaring temple music, no honking of horns and bicycle bells, but voices and the sound of carts being wheeled along the bumpy streets. The Sunday market! I had to go explore! I even put my camera on the "cuisine" setting when I saw all the great veggies and spices, fish and implements that were on offer! Those purple pointy things are banana flowers and the dangerous implements are tools for extracting coconut flesh from the shells. That big purple and white thing is me and my butt...

Next on the itinerary was the obligatory Kodai bike ride around the lake next to Bryant's Park. We rented them for 10 Rs per hour (25cents) and took off. Of course, the lake turned out to have a much longer perimeter than it appeared, due to the meandering nature of its "arms", but we made it past the shop stalls, lotuses, honeymooners and even all the volunteers who offered to take our pictures in just under 2 hours.

We even ran into the little old guy with his puppy whom I had been trying to catch in town! The guys at the hotel were sweet and let us wash up after our bike ride and after having checked out! And just in time, too, because as our bus was arriving, it began to pour! The first was a wedding in the family of Dr. Gigi, with whom I am working and the second was in the family of one of the babies I caught. The first was in a small town near Nagercoil and due to the fact that the wedding was immediately after the first surgery of the day, I didn't get a chance to grab my camera and take pictures, so descriptions will have to suffice. The wedding was of a cousin of Dr. Gigi's. Both members of the couple are doctors, as were almost all the attendees. In fact, the main difference between this wedding and a medical convention was the gorgeous attire, with the added bonus of better food! The bride and groom both sported matching flower garlands and both carried large bouquets of flowers. The bride wore an elaborate sari that appeared to be about 50% beads and gold thread, as well as about 20 pounds of gold jewellery - stunning! The ceremony had started before we arrived, so I can't comment on that, other than the fact that there were hundreds of people in attendance. We walked from the wedding to a reception hall where we were treated to a feast and wedding cake and then had to get back to Tirunelveli since 3 of the people in our car were also doctors. Dr. Gigi's 2 daughters rode in the back seat with me and regaled me with reviews of the latest Harry Potter books they had read. Dr. Gigi's older daughter, Gina, has qualified with very high marks for entering medical school so will be going off to her studies soon.

The second wedding I attended was in a small town called Kayalpatnam or Kayalpattinam, depending on the sign you look at. I was invited to this one by the auntie of a new baby. The wedding festivities began the day before the wedding and the confusion began a little before that. It seems everyone I asked told me that to get to Kayapatnam you have to first pass through Tiruchendur, so that was where I told the bus driver I was headed. About 2 hours into the trip, I began seeing signs reading "....Kayalpattinam" and "...Kayalpatnam" and asked whether this was indeed the town we were in. The bus driver told me yes, so I asked him to let me off. Silly me. He did. I was now in Kayalpatnam with no idea how to get where I was going. I tried to call the kindly doctor whom the TPA director had given me contact info, but no answer. I tried calling the auntie, whom I later found out doesn't live in Kayalpatnam, who told me she was on her way there, from where I couldn't quite understand. I asked her to tell the man at the phone stand where I was and how to get to her house. He talked to her for a few minutes and then hung up the phone, leaving me as much in the dark as I was to begin with since he didn't speak English and for some reason I still don't speak Tamil. He did flag down an autorickshaw and got me a ride which turned out to be to the home of the maternal grandmother of the new baby. The baby and mom were there as well, although, it still being less than 6 weeks after the birth of the baby, the mom still isn't allowed to go outside to greet visitors so I didn't see her until I was safely inside.

Between all the food and all of the "Rest Now" requests, I was bustled hither and thither to all the relatives on all sides of the family, down all the narrow alleys and passageways in Kayalpatnam for tea, snacks and meals. Everyone wanted to give me something, so I came away with lots of new things to send home. Some interesting.

The wedding itself was also interesting. The women's part was held in a hall where all the female members of both families gathered to appreciate and decorate the bride and pray and take lots of pictures... all at the same time. Then the groom and the men joined us and the ceremony was over rather quickly, followed by another round of visiting and later another feast which included huge piles of biryani on banana leaves.

Later we visited a 100 year old church and a famous mosque.

Afterward, we visited Mina Garden and drank coconut juice and watched our driver climb a jackfruit tree and bowl with coconuts. (see pics). I apologize for these last being sideways but will try to correct later. Auntie also has a lovely little swimming pool where she swims and allows town folk to swim occasionally before reusing the water to irrigate the garden... very good resource management.

My ride back to Tirunelveli/Pallayamkotai was courtesy of auntie, who, it turns out, lives in Tirunelveli, about 5 minutes from me. She sent me home with 2 pineapples from her garden, iddly and palm fruit juice which we had purchased on the way back from the garden.

I was totally exhausted on arriving home and had a much needed long sleep before rejoining the working world the next day.

More posts to come!

Twins, Kumily, Elephants

We had twins the other day! Both were over 2 kg. Girl first vertex and then boy breech. Exciting stuff! I caught more babies last week and then on Friday, we travelled to Kumily/Kumali/Kumuly, depending on the sign you looked at. I read this morning that about 6 months ago there was some unrest at the checkpoint crossing the border between Tamil Nadu State and Kerala at that point, but all it amounted to for us was a 20 minute wait for the guy to come back from eating dinner. It was actually kind of nice that they only allowed one way traffic at that point with such a narrow winding road! My ears popped for the first time in a month! I was so excited! The scenery on the way up the mountain was breathtaking. So much so that I didn't get any photos of that part of the trip. It was hard to believe our bus could navigate some of the hairpin turns! When we arrived at the top it was amazing to look down at the route we had just covered - almost straight up!

In the morning we went on a boat ride in Periyar Wildlife Preserve. Didn't see any tigers, although we heard later that one of the tour groups behind ours heard one. We saw elephants, otters, turtles, lots of different birds, sambar *(deer) and wild boars. We then took a trek for a couple of hours on which our guide showed us monkeys and signs of sloth bears and many herbs and wild plants and spices.

Later Saturday we attended a performance of Kathkali dance, full of sex and violence! More on that later.

On Sunday we visited an organic spice garden where we learned all about growing pepper, nutmeg, mace, vanilla, cardamom, mango ginger, cinnamon and allspice as well as coffee and cacao. The owner kept treating me as though I was their most important guest and bringing me his certifications and all kinds of information on different plants used for Ayurvedic medicine. I felt so special! Later we visited the shop where all of the spices and coffee are sold so of course I bought some of everything!

The bus ride home was extremely memorable as it lasted 3 hours longer than the trip to Kumily! Hot, hotter and hottest! Got back to Tirunelveli at about 10pm and then walked to the hospital where we got an auto-rickshaw back to the house.

I know I haven't put in pictures for all of this, but please be patient with me! I caught on ebaby already today and i am late getting back to the hospital. I promise more later!

Stay well and stay cool for me and keep knitting when I forget to bring mine!! (another story!)

love to all!

Deborah

Varkala, babies and goats oh my

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063541193068565282" style="FLOAT: left; They tend to gang up on me after a few.

The trip to Varkala was very interesting. Nice scenery on the way. Even saw a field of windmills. Nice pretty hills and lovely sunset from the train and beach scenes while there.

This morning I had forgotten to set up a ride to work so I walked in and there were goats in the median at the intersection with the light, waiting to cross. Mama and 2 kids. It was "only" about 93 degrees so I didn't die.

I may go to the local beach tomorrow for a change of scenery. Dr. Gigi may pick me up and let me go with her and her girls. Her oldest daughter was the mc for the program the other night. The whole family has been so friendly to me, along with all the other staff at the hospital. It has been a joy working here. From what I hear from other volunteers, I must have the best placement in the country. People have been very accommodating and have welcomed me with open arms.

I hope everyone is doing well back at home and those of you abroad as well! I miss talking to you all and will try to Skype when I can!

More babies, more heat

I just posted the pictures that go with the last post, so please scroll down and take a peak! I don't have many new photos, especially since I was not quick enough this morning to catch the lizard who was making his way across the wall of the scrub room and into the operating theater.

I was introduced to a new tool today: electric flyswatter. Used in the OR. Didn't see it in action, but I'm sure it is quite effective.

I have been able to observe several surgeries and several caesarian deliveries. Yesterday we had a cardiac patient in labor. Learned after the delivery that her mitral regurgitation was asymptomatic but was being observed and set up for instrument delivery because she was known to have had rheumatic fever. Delivery went fine and mom and baby perked right up after delivery.

I will post new pictures after the weekend change of scenery. Hope to have lots of beautiful shots. Also hope to get a nice ac room with a real shower!!! What a concept!

Everyone enjoy the "cool" weather you are having for me. I dream about it every night. Let me know how everything is going with all of you. I was so happy to be able to get to be there! Syed Ali Fatima doesn't speak English but gave me a big smile when we were taking pictures of her with her new baby girl. Both moms did great and I have to hand it to my team, the delivery room nurses who have learned all the new-fangled American techniques in record time and are a fantastic help.

Today when I cam home it started to rain frogs(!) I took a picture of this one after he fell through the open window onto my shoulder and I corralled him back out the window.

I wanted everyone to see the mango tree outside my window, so I took a picture of that as well.

Things here are very different but very interesting. The people here are very friendly and are all helping me a lot, especially at the hospital. Dr. Gigi and all of the doctors and nurses who work with her are great. I am taking pictures of everyone and will post as soon as I can get the photos to upload.

I am using my landlady's computer right now so I will hurry and post. I am still collecting things together to pack (Where is my swimsuit??) and trying to organize everything. The knitting workshops both went well and I guess they are something I should continue when I get back. It was so nice to meet new people and new knitters and fun to watch Maya learn to knit while chasing Zhoie around. I think she still learned things.

Shown here are 2 wall hanging quilts that are made from batiked cotton. Each is about 3.5 by 5 feet. I am putting these up for sale separately. One is mainly reds, golds, purples and orange, the other is mainly blues, turquoise, green, purples. The best bid will win each and I will contact with payment details.

Below those are pictures of the Peacock spinning wheel that I am offering for sale. It has been repaired. The platform was cracked when the people in NZ didn't quite pack it for an overseas shipping, but it seems to work fine now. It has an integral lazy kate for 3 bobbins and is very pretty to look at. The white fur in the picture is not spinning fiber, but rather our attack mop, Charlie. He is not included in the sale. The last one of these that I saw on the Spinners' and Weavers' Housecleaning Pages went for $300, but since this one has been repaired, I would accept less.

So, in a little over 2 weeks I expect to start posting pictures from India. Please let me know what you are interested in seeing and I will try to look for things.

Jhansi has told me that her mango tree is producing fruit so I will be eating fresh mangoes soon. I will be sure to take pictures of the tree and the garden. I also think I will bring her some seeds to try growing along with the other groceries. She has promised to help me find yarn so I am glad to bring her things she can't get at home.

Sorry for the choppy post, but I am getting a little frazzled with planning and prepping... I really expect to be overwhelmed by the sheer number and size of the temples I see.

I have been doing lots of homework on the culture and environment in India and am amazed at the diversity and history of the place. I am incorporating some of what I am learning in the talk I will give tonight at the library in Cascade. There were some very enlightening statistics on the economy, growth of personal wealth, health care providers balanced against health care consumers, education levels and the like. I hope my audience finds it all as fascinating as I do.

I ran the sari that Jeremy brought back through the wash yesterday so that even if I don't have time to sew my other outfits I will have something appropriate to wear getting off the plane and onto the train for the last leg of my journey to Tirunelveli.

I got terribly brave last week and emailed the Indian Minister of Maternal and Family Health. Her name showed up on an official website as having given a talk related to International Women's Day (March 8) so of course I couldn't help myself. I had to see if there is any kind of project going on near where I will be situated where I could offer my services training rural birth attendants. That was one of the things I have read they are trying to focus on. One part of their plan is to reduce the Maternal Mortality rate of over 300 per 100,000 live births (about 1 every 7 minutes). It seems that it is rare for any woman to receive more than 3 prenatal visits during any pregnancy. I will have to see if I can skew those numbers a tiny fraction.

I am amazed at how quickly my departure is approaching. Will I have time to do everything I need to do or will I have to relinquish control and let other people help? Stay tuned and find out!

D minus 47 and counting

One more shot and I will have all of my inoculations! Now All I have to do is give my talk, teach my workshops, make three outfits, sell a spinning wheel and get packed. Sounds simple, right? If anyone has still not signed up for the knitting workshops, there is still time. The first one: Knuts and Bolts Knitting, which will include 7 ways to cast on, 3 ways to end plus increases and decreases will be on March 10 at 1 pm at the Holy Rosary Chapel in Cascade. The only prerequisites are knit and purl and I can probably help you with that if you are rusty. The second workshop will build on the first and will cover how to read charts and how to re-engineer a pattern to accommodate different yarn or change to sizes that are not included in the pattern. The date for this workshop is March 31, same time, same place.

My talk Woman to Woman: One Woman's Journey, will be held at the Ute Pass Library on Monday, March 12 at 7 pm and will include a brief review of my experience in Afghanistan in 2002 after the Taliban was removed from Kabul and will then cover the things I am looking forward to in India.

I have been assigned to my family in India with whom I will be staying. The postal address is:
17 C/1, North Highground Road
Near Chinmaya School
Tirunelveli
Tamil Nadu
India

I should be there by April 21. The house sounds very nice and I will be sharing a bedroom with another volunteer, Jennifer from Vermont, I believe.

Mrs. Jhansirani and I have been emailing back and forth for a few days now. She seems very friendly and I have already been given a short shopping list of groceries to bring with me which are not found in the local markets. So far, I am to bring with me: Cheddar cheese, soft brown sugar, 2 bars of white chocolate, penne pasta and gummi bears. Sounds do-able.

I have also been assigned my workplace. The picture at the top of this page is where I will be working: the Annai Velankanni Nursing Home in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India. The chief doctor is Dr. Roy and his wife and mother are both also practicing physicians at the hospital. I will have a 6 hour work assignment every day, Monday through Friday. I just hope I can adapt to the heat quickly so that I can keep up at work. The hospital I am told is a 10 minute bicycle ride from where I will be staying. Since I don't think I will have room for my bicycle in my luggage, I think I will have to rent one when I get there.

I am trying not to get overwhelmed by how quickly my departure date is approaching and all that I have to do to get ready. If anyone remembers something I seem to be forgetting, please give me a holler before I take off, okay?

Until next time, then.

D-minus 58 and counting

This photo is one that Jeremy took on his last trip to India. It is in my dreams until I get to see the real thing.

I will be spending approximately 3 months volunteering in a hospital outside Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, India. I will spend most of my time in the maternity area as that is where most of my experience lies. I will also be able to spend some time studying at an Ayurvedic hospital to learn some of the Ayurvedic medical culture. This is one of my lifelong dreams and promises to give me invaluable experience and tools I can use when I return home.

I have just had the first of 3 installments of my final immunization: Japanese Encephalitis. Had to wait in the office for 30 minutes prior to leaving to guard against side effects. None. Extra time was good for knitting.

My visa arrived a few days ago and my travel arrangements have been made.

My dear Larry gave me the most romantic assortment of Valentine gifts imaginable: a water purifier, mosquito netting and insect spray!

I have 4 fundraisers lined up: a talk at the Ute Pass Library on March 12, 7 pm, during which people may order prints of any of the slides I use in the presentation; taking bids on a Peacock spinning wheel and possibly a Thumbelina as well (contact me for details); 2 workshop sessions for beginning or intermediate knitters being held at the Holy Rosary Chapel in Cascade on March 10 and 31. Suggested donation of $20 each. Both 2 hour workshops will be held at 1pm and both are on Saturdays. The first workshop will be "Knuts and Bolts Knitting" with 7 different cast-ons and 3 different cast-offs/finishings plus 2 modes of invisible seams. The second workshop will be more knitting engineering, with instruction on how to read charts and how to re-engineer a pattern to use different yarn. Anyone interested in attending any of the events should email me to sign up so that I can know how many folks will be attending.

In addition, if anyone just feels like making a small donation to defray the costs of getting me there, getting the immunizations, buying lab coats, ground transports, etc. you can do so using PayPal and my email address. Thank you so much in advance to all participants in any of the events!!
